Voxtrot - Trepanation Party

Voxtrot - Trepanation Party

You know what makes it hard to review CDs? When your girlfriend is in the room attempting to sing along without knowing the words, so all you can hear is the beat and a voice in your left ear going “Nahnahnaaahhnaaaaahhh!”. That said, it shows the strength of the track’s solid groove, created by big splashy piano chords and percussive guitars, with just enough drums to hold it all together.

‘Trepanation Party’ is a great tune for the indie clubs; even if you can’t hear the vocals thanks to background noise or blown speakers the track is just so danceable. That said, the lyrics are perfect, not too heavy but rhythmically perfect and memorable, the whole track has a smoky 80s nightclub gloom to it, in the best possible way, and this is thanks mostly to Ramesh Srivastava’s soft downbeat vocal performance.

This song could easily be from the 80s, the synths and angular guitars are perfect for the era, and the track is immaculately polished. I often find myself criticising songs for not having enough fire and aggression but for once I don’t think it’s needed here, the song is gloriously poppy but has good replay value.

One thing I will say about Voxtrot is that they’re hardly innovative and to be honest if I want to listen to 80s indie/synth hits I’ll probably listen to bands from that period. So Voxtrot, I emplore you, bring in some more modern twists, if only to give me something a bit different to listen to.

Lots of lovely text

Capsula – Rising Mountains

Other than selected single tracks here and there from long-dead sixties bands I don’t reckon I’ve heard much by Argentinian rock groups.

Stag and Dagger, Glasgow: Take Two

May 31, 2009

Glasgow has needed a festival like this for ages.

Sonic Youth – The Eternal

May 31, 2009

If anything, new album The Eternal is even more direct and straight-rocking than its predecessor: it’s what 1992’s Dirty might have sounded like without Butch Vig’s polished production.

Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP

May 31, 2009

Varied, but not disjointed. Concise, but not half-formed.
