The meaning of soul

February 6, 2009 Columns No Comments

To close our informative, eye-opening, enlightening series, we’ve got something in non-word form. We reckon if you’ve been following the series on a day-to-day basis, you’ll have learned a fair shot more on what you think soul is – and you may have discovered a few new artists as a result of not only their music but their opinions. How novel. … Continue Reading

Laura Izibor’s meaning of soul

February 4, 2009 Columns No Comments
Having opened for James Brown and Aretha Franklin, Dublin’s Laura Izibor is certainly well-placed to offer her opinion on what Joe Bloggs would deem ’soul’. She may well fit nicely into the Lauryn Hill slot that’s been free since the turn of the century… here’s what she she had to say: … Continue Reading

The Welcome Wagon’s meaning of soul

February 2, 2009 Columns No Comments

The Welcome To The Welcome Wagon album - by The Welcome Wagon - was famously produced by Sufjan Stevens. It’s arguably the only contemporary liturgical album that the masses got to hear about in 2008. And The Welcome Wagon, equally famously, comprises the Reverend Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique; born in Michigan, the former agnostic studied Theology at Princeton and is now senior pastor of Resurrection Presbyterian Church. Not quite your usual background, then – and to continue, Monique was raised on a farm and has been previously employed as a craftmaker for Martha Stewart. … Continue Reading

We rather like Vessels, go have a listen to them Vessels, go have a listen to them here - their snappy insights on soul proved weightier than imaginable. We hope this inspires you to have a read of our review of White Fields And Open Devices, and then perhaps even go and purchase some of their music. Here’s what they gave us: … Continue Reading

Sam Dufton’s meaning of soul

January 26, 2009 Columns No Comments
The word sole refers to the bottom part of one’s foot or shoe. It is also a type of fish. Turn a few more pages in your dictionary and you come across soul, which exists both with AND without the presence of the aforementioned items. That guy sat next to you in the office, he got soul; just look at the LOVE he’s putting into that digitally rendered map. That little girl who’s dropped her ice cream? SoulFULL: not only is she eating frozen food in winter, she’s also bawling louder than James Brown.

Julian Velard’s meaning of soul

January 23, 2009 Columns No Comments

Currently residing in London, Brooklyn-born Julian Velard is a 29-year-old LaGuardia graduate who you may have seen supporting artists ranging from Goldfrapp and Kate Nash to Jose Gonzalez and Ben Kweller. Trying to rescue The Pop Anthem back from the clutches of The Man, he comes complete with wurlitzer, glockenspiel, melodica and many more… and his singalongs may just hit 2009 with the refreshingly pure-pop bang it’s been dreaming of. Endowed with a gift for storytelling akin to the Stevie Wonders and Elvis Costellos of the world, we’ve certainly got him marked for stardom this year.

Here’s what he had to say: … Continue Reading

Jean Graham’s meaning of soul

January 21, 2009 Columns No Comments

Jean Graham is a DJ, Promoter and Manager, and has written for places of brilliance including Artrocker, The Guardian, and now Muso’s Guide. Her DJ sets take in psychodelia, trip-hop, ska, electro and indie, and she’s currently managing a hot new band called Dynamo Garage, described by XFM’s John Kennedy as “definitely worth a listen”. We’d described them with far more useful words, in a form similar to “a little bit like how you’d imagine a hybrid of The National, Beirut and At The Drive-In to sound”.

Lots of lovely text

Capsula – Rising Mountains

June 2, 2009

Other than selected single tracks here and there from long-dead sixties bands I don’t reckon I’ve heard much by Argentinian rock groups.

Stag and Dagger, Glasgow: Take Two

May 31, 2009

Glasgow has needed a festival like this for ages.

Sonic Youth – The Eternal

May 31, 2009

If anything, new album The Eternal is even more direct and straight-rocking than its predecessor: it’s what 1992’s Dirty might have sounded like without Butch Vig’s polished production.

Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP

May 31, 2009

Varied, but not disjointed. Concise, but not half-formed.
