Art Brut - Alcoholics Unanimous
Sometimes it takes a real event to blow the socks off the music world. In 2005, Art Brut released their début record Bang, Bang, Rock & Roll and UK music fans knew true happiness thanks to an Anglo-Germanic ethos of rocking and, indeed, rolling.
The Gay Blades
Names can so often be misleading in music. Neither …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead nor This Will Destroy You are anywhere near as ferocious as their monikers would suggest, whereas Strapping Young Lad, far from being possible Britpop apers, were a pretty frightening extreme metal band. The point is that whilst there has never been a really good band with “gay” in their title (I offer Gay Dad, Gay Against You and Gay For Johnny Depp as examples).
Les Fauves
These Italian “wild beasts” don’t, on the strength of this single, have a sound that lives up to their name’s connotations. Instead Les Fauves come across like a poppier version of The Dandy Warhols on what is essentially a rather twee and wonky, even drunken, sounding affair.
Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand’s ‘No You Girls’ is out on April 6th 2009Â and is the second single to be released from the Franz Ferdinand: Tonight record.
St. Vincent
On her 2007 debut album, Marry Me, St. Vincent, also known as Annie Clark, finally took centre stage, having previously been a member of the Polyphonic Spree and toured with Sufjan Stevens as part of his band.
Tommy Ludgate
“I’m fed up with my own company/quite fed up with this extreme monotony”. These words could so easily describe my own feelings after listening to this song, for ‘Sweet Release’ has all the artistic merits of a Craig David B-side.
Fever Ray
Sweden has given the world some of the strangest and most infectious pop music of the decade, and pop music doesn’t come much stranger or infectious than that of The Knife, whose album, Silent Shout, from 2006, is a compelling, body-moving, mind-blowing blend of alien synths, warped beats and the processed vocals of Karin Dreijer Andersson.
