Passion Pit – Chunk Of Change

Originally intended to be a Valentine’s Day gift, this lo-fi collection of six electro pop songs has been gaining more and more interest.

Starting off with ‘I’ve Got Your Number’, we begin with a Morse code-like beat intertwined with a simple xylophone melody. It slips into a magnetic chorus which doesn’t intend to let go. It may be lacking a little bit of polish but its rawness lets you into the heart and soul of Passion Pit.

Continuing in a similar fashion but slightly more hypnotic is ‘Smile Upon You’. Driven along by a drumming bass line, and once again gripped by a glorious chorus, it feels like the beginning stages of something special. That doesn’t last long!

As we enter ‘Cuddle Fuddle’ (is that really the best name they could come up with for this track?) I suppose it’s fitting. With a repetitive lyric regarding Rapunzel, which makes you want to self harm yourself, the skip track button becomes more and more attractive.

We continue, after a moment is taken to collect oneself, into ‘Live To Tell The Tale’. Floating along quite nicely, but never really reaching the heights, you wish for it to stay safe and just steady the ship. ‘Better Things’ is certainly an apt name for the penultimate track. After a few seconds of spoken word we burst into an infectious chorus add to that a nice twist near the end when things become calm and we have a song with hit written all over it.

We reverse into ‘Sleepyhead’ with a pounding drum; eclipsing the rest of the EP by someway (and that’s not an easy thing to do). Starting off simply, the verse soon leads into what can only be described as a beautiful chorus. Feelings of grandeur reappear once again, only this time there’s nothing that will take them away.

With the tiniest amount of polish Passion Pit could go all way. They should maybe consider a different name though!
